I have been selected to represent Team USA at the 2015 World University Games in Gawngju, South Korea!
My name is Madeline Kuntz and I am a competitive rower from Philadelphia, PA, and sophomore student-athlete at the University of Alabama. I come from a family of athletes and I have spent my entire life around sports. Growing up, I was involved in both competetive swimming at the Lancaster Aquatic Club and York YMCA, and competetive golf at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy. As a junior in high school, I was mainly focused on golf, but I soon realized that I wasn't going to be good enough to play at a Division I school. Luckily, I heard about a lot of former swimmers who switched their sport to rowing when they went to college. I decided to give it a shot.
I began rowing my senior year of high school at Bachelor’s Barge Club in Philadelphia, PA. Shortly after learning how to row, I fell in love with the sport and decided that I was going to give it everything I had. Unfortunately, I was still living in Lancaster, PA during high school, so for the rest of my senior year, I would drive an hour and a half to practice on the Schuylkill every day. I spent my freshman year of college rowing for Saint Joseph’s University before transferring to the University of Alabama on a rowing scholarship. These past few years I’ve also rowed competitively for Vesper Boat Club and Penn AC, both in Philadelphia. Last summer at U.S. Rowing Club Nationals,, while rowing for the U23 program at Penn AC, I was part of the 2nd-place Women's 2x and the 3rd-place Women's 8+.
While rowing for Vesper Boat Club, I met Coach Liza Dickson. This past December, Coach Liza invited me to Oklahoma City to try out for the chance to represent Team USA at the 2015 World University Games. I am happy to announce that I made the team and am incredibly honored to be representing the USA on such a big stage. I am thankful for all of the support I have received thus far from my family, coaches, teammates, physicians, and the entire Philadelphia rowing community.
I'll also be updating a blog as I train and compete this summer! https://maddyphl.wordpress.com/
My Rally Campaign
- I will be rowing for Team USA at the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea this summer. This event is second in size only to the Olympics.
Why I'm Raising Funds
- To reach my goal of rowing South Korea, I will need roughly $5,000. The United States is one of the few countries that does not provide government funding to any of its national teams. That means our team, just like those going to the Olympics, has to find its own funding to train, travel and compete at this event.
- This amount will cover my stay in the Athlete Village, plane tickets, equipment rental, uniforms, and other registration fees.
Join My Team and Spread the Word!
- I am so fortunate to have been a part of the Philadelphia rowing community over the years. Rowing has taught me invaluable lessons and has changed my life in ways that I never thought possible. As I continue my journey as a competitive rower, I will always remain a part of the Philadelphia rowing community and plan to use all of my experiences to give back to what I consider the greatest rowing city in the world. Thank you for all of your continued support!
