Hi everyone, my name is Ashley Brooke (13) and this year I had the honor of being selected as a member of the Aspire 14 Black Traveling Team. Making the team was no simple task, over 200 girls tried out from all over Maricopa County and only 12 players were selected.
Being a member and Captain (#11) of this traveling volleyball team means that I am responsible, along with my teammates of course, to help raise the funds needed to make sure that we participate in our upcoming tournaments that will be held in Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix and San Diego in hopes to win a bid to play at Nationals in Indianapolis.
WHY I'M RAISING FUNDS
The funds my teammates and I raise will help us cover the costs for tournament fees, training and travel expenses. This is extremely helpful for those teammates that are very talented but do not have the financial means needed.
How I Got Here
I want to share a little bit about myself and how I got where I am today. I’m 13, in middle school and like many other girls my age enjoy spending time with friends and family. With that being said I want you to get to know another side of me you may not know.
I was raised by a single mom (I love her more than she will ever know) who always put ‘family’ first. She always tells my brother and I that the one thing we will always have is each other, everything else is just icing on the cake. Things were not easy growing up and we went without many times. I think that is what has made me appreciate the things and opportunities that I have been given and I don’t take them for granted. My mom has always tried to provide my brother and I with a positive outlet to look forward too and keep us focused which is why she put us in sports at the young age of 4. I grew up playing every sport you could think of and by the age of 9 I developed a true love and passion for volleyball.
My mom calls me a student-athlete because she believes my academics should prioritize over sports. I’ve been a straight A student since elementary which means I’ve been on the Principal’s List numerous times, which definitely makes mom happy. I was inducted into the Elementary Junior Honor Society in the 5th grade and in 6th grade was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society of which I am an active member. While I would love to say school comes first, I actually think that helping others comes first, which is why I volunteer around the community with organizations such as; Phoenix Children’s Hospital, The Kidney Foundation and Feed My Starving Children.
Although I love helping with those organizations my favorite has to be being a Peer Tutor to kids at my school that have Autism. I cannot tell you how much I have learned from working with them as they’re constantly teaching me lessons, keeping me humble and they’re not that different from you and me. In working with them it’s a true partnership and I find myself smiling, learning and laughing the entire time.
So why did I tell you all of this? Because I wanted you to know I’m smart, kind, and determined to reach every goal I set for myself. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me with a donation that will go towards allowing me to travel and play with this amazing group of young ladies that I get to call not only my teammates but my second family for the next 7 months. I aspire to be an inspiration and role-model for young girls that have dreams of pursuing their passion.
