WE'RE HUNGRY FOR GOLD — FEED THE SPEED
Speedskating is the most decorated winter sport in the U.S. With 85 Olympic medals (and counting), our athletes are poised to add to that medal count at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
Now we need your backing to help us get there.
We have just 45 days to raise $50,000 to provide healthly meals for our Long and Short Track athletes as they train for success in Sochi.
DAY IN THE LIFE OF ELITE ATHLETE
They’re on the ice every morning by 8:00 a.m. Time on the ice is followed by time in the gym, lifting, endless squats, and riding the bike. And then they’re back on the ice again. They are constantly supported by coaches, training staff, nutritionists and, of course, parents. For most, this IS their full-time job.
They are focused, dedicated and disciplined. And they have big skates to fill...names like Heiden, Blair and Jansen.
SPEEDSKATER "FUEL" IS CRITICAL
Even with the best coaches and training on the fastest ice in the world at the Utah Olympic Oval, there is one thing that is still key to the success of the best speedskaters in the world — stellar nutrition. Athletes need the fuel of healthly, organic food to help propel them to the podium in Sochi. Good, healthy, and perfectly prepared food can help make the slightest difference in making it to the podium — or not.
By The Numbers
• 1 lap on Olympic Oval = 413 calories per hour.
• Average Olympic hopeful speedskater skates more than 50 laps per day, 320 days a year, burning 3,300 calories a day.
• The team needs an astonishing 100,000 calories a day to go for Gold in Sochi this year.
