- Alpine skiing
My name is Anna Marno, I am an alpine ski racer on the women’s US Ski Team with goals of Olympic and World Cup success. Working towards my goals has been the journey of a lifetime and I am only just getting started. I never could have gotten this far without the endless support from my friends, family, coaches, sponsors, and community. Although ski racing is an individual sport, success requires a team, and a community. Join my team as I continue my journey to the top!
How I got here
I started skiing as soon as I could walk. I remember waddling around my house with all of my ski clothes on, (boots, skis, and poles included) in early November, anticipating the opening day of our ski area. The Snowy Range Ski Area, outside of Centennial Wyoming, was my weekend home; our car was often the first to pull into the parking lot, and the last to leave.
With my dad as my coach and my brother as my bigger, faster, teammate, I never thought twice about being a ski racer. Soon we were driving to Colorado on weekends to race in the 'big leagues'. As my brother and I grew older and raced faster, it was obvious that we were going to be ski racing for years to come.
In 2004, we packed up our home in Centennial and moved to Steamboat Springs Colorado in search of bigger mountains and more competition. We spent the next 8 years growing up in Steamboat as we worked harder and harder to turn our dreams to reality. The Lowell Whiteman High School made it possible to train, and travel with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, and receive a somewhat normal high school education at the same time.
In the spring of 2009, at the age of 16, I was nominated for the US Ski Team, and I have spent the last four years training and racing on an international level.
Why I need your help
The last three years have stretched my love for ski racing more than I thought was possible. I have recovered from two major knee injuries and surgeries, the most recent of which is nearing the end of rehabilitation as I get ready to kick off the upcoming season. Although the last three years have been challenging and testing, there have also been moments of achievement and success that have made my passion for skiing stronger than ever. Through the ups and downs, I know that ski racing is what I want to do; it is where my commitment, drive, and motivation are unbreakable. I love my sport and I want to share my excitement for it with the world.
At this point in my career I am responsible for funding my own travel, training, and racing costs. This season the cost of competing in North-American Cup, European Cup, and potentially World Cup races will cost me $25,000.
Coming into this winter, I have reached my goals in physical therapy and conditioning, and I had a very successful return to snow this August after seven months of knee rehabilitation; I feel more ready mentally and physically to race than ever before. By reaching my fundraising goal I will have the opportunity to continue on my journey as I travel and ski race around the world.
My free time
The last two summers, I have been a student at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where I am slowly chipping away at an undergraduate degree.
I spend as much time as possible mountain biking, horseback riding, backcountry skiing, backpacking, hiking, running, and whatever else will get me away from the roads and into the mountains.
When I can I try to share my love for the outdoors by coaching skiing and mountain biking for younger athletes.
