Meet Kelly Gunther.
Kelly is a long track speed skater on the U.S. National Speed Skating Team. 3 years ago, just after a heart-breaking unprecedented ruling which saw her ticket to 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver taken away, Kelly suffered a horrific injury that threatened her career and had a possibility of having her foot amputated. The odds were against her skating to the level she had been again. Racing was out of the question. But Kelly has the tendency to defy odds. It's what she does.
Kelly went through intense rehabilition at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs Colorado, the first time for almost 6 months, and the following year for about 4 years after she had all the hardware (plate, pin, and ten screws) removed from ankle. Kelly did push and NEVER gave up!!! She is a fighter, a racer and wanted to fillful her dreams no matter how the odds were against her.
Kelly has come full circle and did overcome the odds, she made the World Cup team this Fall, and then a few weeks ago Kelly became an OLYMPIAN, yes an Olympian, she is going to Sochi to represent her country in the Womens Long Track 1000m race! She also is the alternate for the team pursuit.
But now Kelly is facing an even greater challenge, insurmountable DEBT.
*** Kelly does not receive any financial support from U.S. Speedskating or the United States Olympic Committee. Kelly was fortunate enough to make the National Long Track Team this year and does receive much non-financial support from U.S. Speedskating. She receives her Ice time, Coaching, Trainers, among other numerous non-financial perks. Kelly does not though receive any stipend or financial support from these organizations. This meaning she is responsible for her own living expenses (rent, utilities, food, skating equipment, insurance, gas, and other miscellaneous expenses). And as most of you can imangine, trying to worry about all these expenses and train, as an Olympic athlete needs to could be quite difficult.
Kelly worked up until her accident, and then again for over the past year. She worked part-time just to try to help out, because she HATES to ask for money from anyone. She worked all through this past summer when training was at its hardest, until she just had to take a leave of absence while training for the Olympic Team! ***
Training to be an Olympian is more than a full-time job. As I said Kelly hates to ask for help, but now is the time she needs help.
