Who I Am
My name is Kiley McKinnon, I'm 18 years old, and I am a member of the U.S Freestyle Aerials Ski Team. When you watch aerials from the sideline, you may wonder how someone gains the courage to do this sport. Well, it's just as intense for the athletes themselves. Let me explain it from my perspective. I go off the 60 plus degree jump at about 58 km/h, reach 30 to 35 feet in the air and land on an extremely steep landing hill all while attempting to do perfect mutiple twisting double backflps. It may sound crazy but the feeling you get from it all is why I love the sport so much.
After only being involved in the sport for 3 years, I have gone from the Elite Aerial Development Program to being named to the U.S Freestyle Aerials Ski Team. In the 2011/12 season, I was the Noram Grand Prix champion and finished 3rd at Junior Worlds. This past season, I was named the FIS Rookie of the Year after competing on my first World Cup Tour and receiving a personal best finish of 4th at Bukovel, Ukraine. My season ended being ranked 2nd in the U.S and 10th in the world.
To hopefully make it to the Olympics in Sochi, Russia and continue to progressing in the sport of freestyle aerials.
My parents have been my only team throughout my career so far. Without their support, I would not be where I am today. They have been there for me each and everyday in order to make sure that I can achieve my goals.
