My Story and Why
Hola! Hello! Just inches off the ice, I slide headfirst down a bobsled track at speeds of up to 85mph. I also reguarly train at one of the biggest ski halfpipes in the world.
I am a competitor in two sports- skeleton and freestyle halfpipe skiing, and hope to represent Venezuela in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
I hope that my involvement in skeleton and skiing helps inspire athletes from other countries that do not already have a large presence in winter sports to pursue their Olympic dreams. In addition, I have seen sports serve as a a unifying factor within so many countries- from the Miracle on Ice during the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid to Ruben Limardo's (epee fencing) first gold medal for Venezuela in 44 years in the 2012 Olympics in London. I aspire that my dual sport participation throughout the World Cup circuit for skiing and Intercontinental Cup circuit for skeleton eventually leads to the Olympics for both sports. I also dream that my performances help contribute to a greater sense of unity not only in Latin America but also throughout the world.
While I was born in the United States, my mother was born and raised in Venezuela. I was raised in a bilingual and bicultural household, and have always wanted to use my athletics to help impact the world.
By contributing, you will help me on my journey to the 2014 Olympics and also help to show that it is possible for athletes, regardless of national identity, origin, or background, to compete at the elite level in winter sports.
What I Need
While I am grateful to compete for Venezuela, the nation does not provide me with any financial support. I work at a few jobs to pay for expenses, however these can add up quickly. So, I am in need of additional support to help to continue to compete at the elite level, internationally.
Here is a breakdown of expenses for this season:
-Skeleton Ice and coaching fees for the season at the Park City track: $1,200
-Ski Coaching Fees: $2,500
-Travel expenses to competitions at the North American and European tracks: $5,000
-Skeleton runners (steel blades at the bottom of my skeleton sled): $200-$700 each.
-New skeleton helmet: $650
-New Skis: $300
-Race fees: $30/race for 5-10 races: $150-$300
Please check out the perks on the right-hand-side of the page. I'm giving everything from personalized postcards to a Venezuelan flag, your name on my sled, and more!
If I don't receive all funding but still some, I'll still be able to compete, just not at all the tracks that I hope to. The more tracks that I compete at, the better position I am to earn a more points which will help add to my world ranking. A world eanking will help determine the competitors for the 2014 Olympics.
At the end of the 2012-2013 season with a world points ranking of #73 for Women's Skeleton and #59 for Women's Ski Halfpipe.
These are the international skeleton races and freestyle contests that I competed at last season:
North America's Cup- Calgary, Canada (November 2012)
Europa Cup- Igls, Austria (January 2013)
North America's Cup- Lake Placid, New York (March 2013)
World Cup- Park City, Utah (January-February 2013)
Revolution Tour- Sun Valley, Idaho (March 2013)
My best result was #33 out of 41 competitors at the World Cup in Park City, Utah.
