Citizen Sciencing for the Next Generation
As a career outdoor educator and an avid outdoorswoman, I care a lot about the important work The Mountaineers does to transform lives and protect wild places.
If you know me, you know that the teenagers I work with are some of the most important people in my life. I want them to thrive as leaders in the outdoors, I want them to mentor future generations in the outdoors, and I want them to get to experience all of the beautiful natural places I was so lucky to experience in my teens, 20's, 30's and today.
I also believe that as outdoor adventurers, we have an opportunity to contribute directly to science that will help protect the places that make us whole. My goal this summer is to contribute to citizen science projects on 10 separate occasions. Some of the projects I will be contributing to are: Peaking for Pikas, Worldwide Microplastics and MeadoWatch.
I'm Citizen Sciencing to raise $2,500 for The Mountaineers youth programs and to show my fellow adventurers how easy it is to make a difference doing what we love to do anyway, and to help support getting more of the next generation outside.
Our Parks | Your Adventure challenge
Designed to inspire our community to get outside and celebrate our wild places, the Our Parks Your Adventure Challenge is a fun way for Mountaineers to challenge themselves while doing good for our community. From urban parks to National Parks and everything in between, our community of adventurers are rallying together to raise $40,000 for Mountaineers youth programs.
Getting the next generation outside
The outdoors has the power to transform our minds and fuel our souls. At The Mountaineers, we've been getting poeple outside for 111-years, and we're still inspired by the smiling faces returning from the outdoors. We believe everyone should experience the magic of our wild places, and that's why we're committed to bringing outdoor experiences to today’s youth.
OPYA supports The Mountaineers youth programs where we introduce young people to the benefits of the outdoors: self-confidence and self-reliance, perseverance, an appreciation for the natural world and protecting it, and a healthy, meaningful life. In 2017 alone, we introduced 1,670 youth to the outdoors - 975 of whom were on scholarship and wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to engage with the outdoors. Please donate to support this amazing cause, or consider joining Team OPYA to fundraise with your own challenge. You can learn more about the entire program on our FAQ page.
