I’m Tess and I’m passionate about supporting the next generation of adventurers because spending time in the outdoors has helped keep me happy and healthy and taught me perseverance, self-confidence and self-reliance. This summer, I will be headed to explore the remote Ha-Iltzuk ice field in Canada with three fellow Mountaineers to raise $1500 for Mountaineers youth programs. We plan on climbing Mount Silverthrone and a few of the surrounding peaks and perhaps even get a first ascent.
A little more about our adventure....
Silverthrone and the Ha-Iltzuk ice field is remote. It is really only accessible by helicopter and is rarely explored or summited. When I say remote I mean when you type in the nearest town into google maps and try and get directions Google Maps says they can't calculate directions or estimate mileage. When you look at in google earth there aren't good images just white showing all the ice and snow. My team is excited to surround ourselves with ice and snow and get a taste of what it feels like to be stepping on land few or potentially no people have ever stepped before.
A few more facts. Mount Silverthrone is rumored to be British Columbia's tallest volcano but it has so much ice and snow on it scientists have had a hard time estimating its true height. Most ascents and descents have been ski descents along its mellower North East Ridge route.

Our Parks | Your Adventure challenge
Designed to inspire our community to get outside and celebrate our wild places, the Our Parks Your Adventure Challenge is a fun way for Mountaineers to challenge themselves while doing good for our community. From urban parks to National Parks and everything in between, our community of adventurers are rallying together to raise $40,000 for Mountaineers youth programs.
Getting the next generation outside
The outdoors has the power to transform our minds and fuel our souls. At The Mountaineers, we've been getting poeple outside for 111-years, and we're still inspired by the smiling faces returning from the outdoors. We believe everyone should experience the magic of our wild places, and that's why we're committed to bringing outdoor experiences to today’s youth.
OPYA supports The Mountaineers youth programs where we introduce young people to the benefits of the outdoors: self-confidence and self-reliance, perseverance, an appreciation for the natural world and protecting it, and a healthy, meaningful life. In 2017 alone, we introduced 1,670 youth to the outdoors - 975 of whom were on scholarship and wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to engage with the outdoors. Please donate to support this amazing cause, or consider joining Team OPYA to fundraise with your own challenge. You can learn more about the entire program on our FAQ page.
